General Description

The Medical Advisor assists in providing leadership and support to meet the instructional goals of the anesthesia technology program.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Medical Advisor is responsible, in conjunction with the Anesthesia Technology Program Director, for quality assurance of educational offerings, review and assessment of course content.

Specific duties:

1. Assist faculty in providing a quality educational experience for students through review and approval of the program content to ensure that the medical components of the curriculum, both didactic and supervised practice, meet current standards of medical practice.

1. Curriculum:
a. reviewing program exams and assessment methods

reviewing current curriculum for accuracy and best practice

c. evaluation of students (ACLS, PALS, simulation and clinical and performance)

2. Instruction/Assessment:

a. Provide an instructional lesson (theory or lab) in each core course each semester

Review and approve the progress of students throughout the program and assist in the development of appropriate corrective measures when a student does not show adequate progress,

c. May assist and/or review a corrective plan of action developed for the student by faculty and/or the Program Director.

d. Assist the Program Director in evaluating the competence of each prospective graduate of the program in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains during the final capstone course.

3. Provide the Program Director and Division Dean with input regarding the need for faculty development.

4. Attend faculty meetings when available.

5. Assist in the development of short and long range plans for the program.

6. Support compliance with accreditation standards.

7. Work in conjunction with the Program Director as needed to address all aspects of the program.

8. Support the need to assess performance and quality of the assigned and delegated responsibilities within the program, and recommend action when needed.

9. Review and evaluate the information within the anesthesia technology annual report.

10. Serve as the Chair of the Anesthesia Technology Advisory Committee.

11. Other responsibilities as mutually agreed upon with the Division Dean and/or Program Director.

Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.

Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.

Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC’s established safety and health procedures and practices.

Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation and shelter in place drills and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.

Minimum Education/Experience

Currently practicing, licensed physician within the United States and the state of Oklahoma. Board certified in anesthesiology.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Adequate training and experience in the care of patients receiving anesthesia.

Demonstrated positive human relations and communication skills

Basic computer skills, proficient in the use of Microsoft Office or similar software

Flexible teaching style to accommodate individual learning styles

Committed to helping students achieve their goals to be successful and attain a college education

Knowledge of or willingness to learn computer programs used in the department and on campus (such as MineOnline and Moodle)

Organization and attention to detail

Support and willingness to teach in a competency-based instructional system

Ability to work independently and coordinate work with colleagues and peers

Ability to work well as a team member in an instructional unit

Ability to communicate and articulate concepts in an organized manner both verbally and in writing

Ability to read and understand content in order to assist students when they are having difficulty interpreting concepts

Ability to interact in an effective and encouraging manner with students individually and in groups

Must be punctual

Must be reliable

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

1. GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sedentary work: The person in this position may occasionally exert up to 10 pounds of force to grasp, lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to students, patients, faculty, staff, and others to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.

This position requires the person to frequently move about the classroom and lab area to assist students and perform the essential functions of the position.

This position requires the person to frequently remain in a standing and stationary position.

This position frequently requires the person to operate a computer, other office equipment, and mobile devices to perform the essential functions of the position.

This position requires the person to frequently operate equipment that involves repetitive motions of hands, wrists, and/or fingers.

This position requires the person to perceive attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

This position requires the person to frequently position self to work with classroom and lab equipment to instruct or assist students and patients.

3. VISUAL ACUITY:
This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.

4. WORKING CONDITIONS
This position performs the essential functions in an indoor, office setting.
