General Description

Provide comprehensive academic advising services to students. The Advisor will assist students in academic planning, choosing a major, resolving academic difficulties, and providing information about the College’s available support services.

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement)

Provides comprehensive and intentional advising services to students with the purpose of helping students to articulate and achieve their individual educational goals.

Assists students with specific curriculum decisions, including the appropriate choice and scheduling of courses, selection or change of program/major, taking into consideration academic background, assessment testing results, and non-academic factors such as family and work commitments.

Ensures that students are aware of the OCCC graduation requirements specific to their program/major through the use of degree audits and evaluations.

Assists students transferring to other institutions of higher education through application and interpretation of requirements, as well as articulation agreements in place.

Serves as a resource for students, faculty, parents, and other staff having questions about programs or academic policies and procedures.

Makes referrals to both on and off campus support services as needed.

Assist with the management of check-in kiosk.

Job Duties (Safety / Policy & Procedures)

Abide by the policies and procedures published in the Board of Regents Policies and College Policies & Procedures

Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.

Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.

Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC’s established safety and health procedures and practices.

Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation and shelter in place drills and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.

Minimum Education/Experience

Bachelor’s Degree

Two years full-time work experience advising, coaching, or counseling individuals.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to work flexible and evening hours.

Demonstrated positive human relations and communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to work well one-on-one with individuals.

Basic computer literacy.

Ability to problem-solve.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

1. GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sedentary work: The person in this position may occasionally exert up to 10 pounds of force to grasp, lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

2. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
This position requires the person to frequently move about the Office of Academic Advising to assist students and perform the essential functions of the position.

This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to students, administration, faculty, staff, and others to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.

This position frequently requires the person to operate a computer and other office equipment to perform the essential functions of the position.

This position requires the person to frequently operate equipment that involves repetitive motions of hands and wrists.

This position requires the person to frequently remain in a standing and stationary position.

This position requires the person to frequently position self to access materials that may be above head or at ground level.

3. VISUAL ACUITY:
This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.

4. WORKING CONDITIONS
This position performs the essential functions in an indoor office setting.

Preferred Qualifications

Coursework in Student Development Theory.

Experience in an Academic Advising Office.

Experience in a Community College.

Work Hours

Work hours will be scheduled during the Academic Advising Office’s hours of operation:
Monday 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Tuesday – Thursday 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
May be scheduled extended evening hours and/or weekends during heavy enrollment periods.
