General Description

The Chemistry and/or Physics TAP Tutor is responsible for assisting students who require additional help in Chemistry, Physics and Physical Science. The Chemistry and/or Physics TAP Tutor also assists in the maintenance of the laboratory areas.

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement)

Assist students with lecture and laboratory material during scheduled hours in the Physical Science Center.

Maintain and report attendance information to the Physical Science Lab Supervisor.

Understand, obey and enforce all safety and health regulations applicable in a science laboratory. This will include, but not be limited to, state and federal regulations concerning the handling of hazardous materials.

Effectively interact and communicate with students, faculty and staff while performing duties.

Fulfill student and institutional needs by maintaining a flexible work schedule assigned by the Physical Science Laboratory Supervisor.

Job Duties (Safety / Policy & Procedures)

Abide by the policies and procedures published in the Board of Regents Policies and College Policies & Procedures

Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.

Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.

Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC’s established safety and health procedures and practices.

Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation and shelter in place drills and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.

Minimum Education/Experience

Completion of General Chemistry I, Physics I, or Engineering Physics with a C or better.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

The ability to communicate laboratory procedures and theoretical concepts to an individual or group of students.

The ability to use basic algebra, trigonometry, etc. to solve elementary chemistry and physics problems ( i.e. molarity, normality, percentages by weight or volume, etc.)

Knowledge of and experience with laboratory equipment, materials and procedures.

Positive communications and human relations skills.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

1. GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Medium work: This position requires the person to occasionally exert up to 50 pounds of force and frequently exert up to 20 pounds of force and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to grasp, lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

2. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to students, faculty, staff, and others to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.

This position requires the person to frequently move about the Chemistry/Physics Lab to assist students and perform the essential functions of the position.

This position frequently requires the person to operate a computer and other office/lab equipment to perform the essential functions of the position.

This position requires the person to frequently operate equipment that involves repetitive motions of hands and wrists.

This position requires the person to frequently remain in a standing and stationary position.

This position requires the person to frequently position self to access materials that may be above head or at ground level.

This position requires the person to use upper and lower body to exert force up to 50 pounds to push, pull, grasp, and/or lift materials or equipment.

This position requires the person to frequently position self to work with lab equipment or assist students.

3. VISUAL ACUITY:
This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.

4. WORKING CONDITIONS
This position’s essential functions are performed in an indoor, office or lab setting.

This position requires the person to frequently be exposed to hazards such as but not limited to: close proximity to moving mechanical parts and/or electrical current; exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals, oils, and/or infectious diseases.

This position requires the person to frequently be exposed to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, and gases.

This position occasionally requires the person to wear a respirator.
