General Description

The ESL Instructor will assist adults in acquiring and developing literacy and numeracy skills; acquiring the necessary academic prerequisites to access further post-secondary education and skill training opportunities, or employment and workplace training opportunities; increasing educational levels for purposes of self-improvement; learning and developing living and social skills; and acquiring and developing English language skills.

Teach literacy and how it relates to the adult’s role as a worker, parent, and citizen

Distinguish the differences between the child and the adult as a learner

Provide successful teaching strategies and appropriate accommodations for adults with Learning Disabilities and Special Learning Needs

Develop an instructional (lesson) plans for adults based on their educational needs and goals and keep them available onsite

Teach a multi-level class of adults

Use technology in the classroom for instructional purposes

Assess the basic skills of adults using the Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and /or Basic English Skills Test (BEST)

Administer Standardized Tests

Serve people in the community who are most in need of literacy services, including those adults who have low incomes or minimal literacy skills

Make learning student-centered and relevant to the individual student’s goals

Be at the classroom site at least 15 minutes before class is to begin

Engage in active teaching strategies which emphasize problem-solving skills and relate learning to the student’s prior experiences and knowledge

Provide an accessible and barrier free environment

Provide instruction in the reading strategies such as phonemic awareness, systematic phonics, fluency, and reading comprehension that research has proven to be effective in teaching adults to read

Provide learning in real life contexts to ensure that an individual has the skills needed to compete in the work place and exercise the rights and responsibilities of a citizen and a parent

Obtain 15 professional development points

Job Duties (Safety / Policy & Procedures)

Abide by the policies and procedures published in the Board of Regents Policies and College Policies & Procedures.

Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.

Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.

Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC’s established safety and health procedures and practices.

Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation and shelter in place drills and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.

Minimum Education/Experience

Oklahoma Teacher’s Certification

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Familiarity with the National Reporting System (NRS) goals for Oklahoma including how to complete: a student enrollment form; initial roll; final roll; sign-in sheets; student portfolio; student file; lesson plans; learning styles inventory; goal setting information for student file/portfolio; and student conduct form

Ability to access technology for e-mails, internet, etc.

Proficient in the use of technology to enhance classroom instruction.

Appropriate and specialized training when teaching in the areas of ESL, Work-based, and Family Literacy.

Demonstrate knowledge of the following:

- the characteristics of the ESL students;

- successful teaching strategies for adults;

- administering a standardized test for adults and how to use this instrument effectively with adult students;

- adult educational materials available for use in ESL classes;

- planing and implementing an individualized course of instruction for the adult learner;

- teaching a multi-level class of adults;

- meeting the needs of the illiterate adults and/or adults with low level reading skills;

- teaching language acquisition skills to various levels of adults whose primary language is not English (Family Literacy teachers must have demonstrated ability to coordinate an adult education program with an early childhood program);

- developing, implementing, and successfully teaching work-based education programs.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

1. GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Light work: The person in this position may occasionally exert up to 20 pounds of force to grasp, lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

2. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to students, faculty, staff, and others to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.

This position requires the person to frequently move about the classroom to assist students and perform the essential functions of the position.

This position frequently requires the person to operate a computer, other office/classroom equipment and mobile devices to prepare instructional documents, answer email correspondence, and complete other activities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

3. VISUAL ACUITY:
This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.

4. WORKING CONDITIONS
This position performs the essential functions in an indoor, classroom or office setting.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching in adult education.

Hours depend upon class schedule. Classes are scheduled Monday through Saturday between the hours of 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM.
