General Description

The Fitness Instructor is responsible for the instruction of their assigned classes. Classes will run on a semester basis with approximately four weeks off at various intervals in a one year period for holidays. An employee in this position has a risk for occupational exposure to human blood or other potentially infectious materials as a result of the performance of the employee’s duties.

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement)

Teach group fitness classes, dance, or cycling classes as assigned.

Attend health and wellness certification seminars/workshops on campus as assigned.

Complete Health and Safety Training as assigned.

Assist in promotion of membership packages to patrons, as well as promotion of non-membership registrations.

Assist the Wellness Center Attendant in providing assistance or care to class participants.

Report daily functions, class enrollments, and maintenance issues to Supervisor.

Work with Wellness Center Attendant to address any immediate concerns.

Provide the patrons with a general knowledge of human dynamics and motion as it relates to safer performance.

Job Duties (Safety / Policy & Procedures)

Abide by the policies and procedures published in the Board of Regents Policies and College Policies & Procedures

Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.

Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.

Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC’s established safety and health procedures and practices.

Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation and shelter in place drills and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.

Minimum Education/Experience

Experience teaching within the course material being hired to teach (i.e. kickboxing, cycling, boot camp, TRX, Zumba, Cross Training, Yoga, Piyo, etc).

Must have current CPR and First Aid certification or be willing to acquire a recognized certification within thirty days of employment.

Must be able to work well with both staff and clients of all age.

Represent the College and Recreation & Fitness in a positive manner.

Exhibit great customer service.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

1. GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Medium work: This position requires the person to occasionally exert up to 50 pounds of force and frequently exert up to 20 pounds of force and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to grasp, lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

2. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
This position requires the person to frequently move about the classroom to properly demonstrate exercise movements and to assist students in performing the essential functions of the position.

This position requires the person to frequently communicate with students, staff, members, visitors, and others to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.

This position requires the person to frequently remain in a standing and stationary position.

This position requires the person to operate equipment that frequently involves repetitive motions of hands and wrists.

This position requires the person to frequently position self to properly demonstrate exercise movements, and/or to lift, push, pull, work on, or operate and/or inspect exercise equipment.

3. VISUAL ACUITY:
This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.

4. WORKING CONDITIONS
This position’s essential functions are performed in an indoor recreation and fitness facility.

Preferred Qualifications

National based certifications from a recognized national certifying aerobics organization such as NDIETA, NETA, ACE, USWFA, AEA, NASM, or others.

One year of experience teaching in type of fitness class applicant is applying for.
